About Chemnitz

Chemnitz er þriðja stærsta borg Saxlands, á eftir Leipzig og Dresden, með tæpa 250.000 íbúa (2019). Hún er staðsett við rætur Erzfjallanna og tekur nafn sitt af ánni Chemnitz sem rennur í gegn um hana. Nafnið er komið úr sorbísku og mun þýða Steiná. Chemnitz er getið í saxlenskum skjölum allt frá árinu 1143, en þar var þá Benediktínaklaustur og þróaðist byggð þar í kring fram eftir öldum. Í dag myndar Chemnitz ásamt Zwickau einn af þremur máttarstólpum Saxlenska þríhyrningsins, en svo nefnist svæðið sem afmarkast af Chemnitz-Zwickau, Leipzig-Halle og Dresden og í búa um þrjár og hálf milljón manna. Tækniháskólinn í Chemnitz er þriðji stærsti háskóli Saxlands með um 10.000 stúdenta.
